Enforcement plan to combat international gambling websites

KUALA LUMPUR: The police believe they have an ‘ace up their sleeve’ to block local websites from being accessed by international gambling syndicates.

Together with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM), the police are in the midst of setting up an enforcement plan for that purpose. Bukit Aman Assistant Director (Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice) Datuk Abdul Jalil Hassan said the move to set up the enforcement plan was imperative to curb gambling syndicates from becoming more active.

He said, in the event SKMM detected any website that would cause unhealthy activities in this country, it would be blocked immediately.

“Based on police surveillance, most of the international gambling sites detected were from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

“Nevertheless, the police are facing difficulties in shutting down the operations (of international gambling syndicates) as they operated in countries which legalise gambling activities.

“Gambling syndicates are always aware of enforcement from the authorities and they tend to study the weaknesses of the public to intensify their activities,” added Abdul Jalil.

He said, although the police could not curb the international operations, enforcement was still carried out in the country, and the relevant authorities informed. — Bernama
