Four fined for drunk driving

KOTA KINABALU: Four local men were each fined RM1,300, in default, three weeks?jail, by the Traffic Court yesterday for separate charges of driving their vehicles under the influence of alcohol.

The deputy registrar of the High Court Korventt Wheezar E Jomiji imposed the fines on Iboh Angih, Mohammad Hafiz, Vincent Wong and Eddy Zulkarnain after they pleaded guilty to each of their charges framed under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The offence is punishable by a maximum fine of RM6,000, or with a jail term of up to 12 months, upon conviction.

Prosecuting officer (PO) Inspector Syahrin Ali told the court that the four accused persons were arrested during an operation along Jalan Kota Kinabalu ?Jalan Penampang on Feb 12.

In a separate case, six men and a woman, all locals, were convicted by the Magistrate Court yesterday for consuming syabu.

Jomiji, who sat as a magistrate, fined Azril Arzira and Nuranisa Adnan, RM1,800, each, in default, two weeks?imprisonment, while Sudirman Gura, Gara Talib, Ranwell Mojilin, Irwan Abdul Rahman and Joeswis Petrus were each jailed for four months.

They admitted to the separate charges framed under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000, or a maximum two years?jail, upon conviction.

PO Inspector Wan Faizal Wan Mahdzir said, all the accused were apprehended at Karamunsing police station after their urine samples tested positive for drug abuse between Feb 6 ?7.

The court also ordered the seven people to be placed under police supervision for two years.
