Sarawak on course to take MSSM crown, Sabah finally taste gold

KOTA KINABALU: Sarawak still lead in the gold medal standings of the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) 2012 Aquatic Championship at the Aquatic Centre in Likas, adding five more gold to their impressive 35 gold medals haul in the swimming event – almost double of that won by the runners-up Selangor with 16 gold.

Sarawak’s gold medallists were Angela Chieng (girls’ 400m individuals mixed in 5:19.26), Welson Sim (boys ‘ 13-15 50m freestyle in 25.43s), Hii Puong Hou, Killian Ung, Nee Gui Ping and Allister Lee (boys’ 7-12 200m medley relay in 2:16.57), Welson Sim, Tang Chong Heng, Anson Go Chang Ping and Ngu Jiung Wei (boys’ 13-15 400m medley relay in 4:11.53) and Alex Tiong, Tiong Huo Fah, Raydon Ong and Jason Jiang Kinlay (boys’ 16-18 400m medley relay in 4:11.24).

Sabah finally procured their first gold medal on the fourth day of the meet through Randall Awang Pan who won the gold in the boys’ 16-18 200m breaststroke clocking 24.55 seconds, a mere .35s difference from silver medallist Chan Jie from Selangor.

However, Selangor are not letting up the challenge when they also grabbed five gold yesterday.

Their gold medal winners were Kok Cher Ling (girls’ 16-18 50m freestyle in 27.65s), Nicholos Soon (boys’ 13-15 200m breaststroke in 2:33.36), Mak Ai Sin (girls’ 16-18 200m in 2:48.67), Fatin Amira Ahmad Hadri, Izzah Sa’aid Ramdzan, Shannen Kay Chan and Kimberly Ong (girls’ 7-12 200m medley relay in 2:22.19) and Caroline Chan, Mak Ai Sin, Sabrina Tiew Siew Lin and Kok Cher Ling (girls’ 16-18 400m medley relay in 4:40.59).

Johor and Wilayah Persekutuan obtained three gold medals each. Johor’s gold medallists were Tia’A Faang Der (boys’ 400m individuals mixed in 4:48.12), Cindy Tai (girls’ 7-12 50m freestyle in 29.90s) and Kenji Lim (boys’ 7-12 50m freestyle in 28.37s).

Tan Rou Ying (girls’ 13-15 50m freestyle in 28.78), Phee Jing En (girls’ 13-15 breaststroke in 2:53.07) and Tan Rou Ying, Phee Jing En, Nur Hanisah Abdul Mutalib and Zoe Natasha Bowden (girls’ 13-15 400m medley relay in 4:45.09) contributed to Wilayah Persekutuan’s gold medals tally.

Kedah’s Khaw Chan Hao took the gold in the boys’ 16-18 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:30.25.
