MIRI: SM Sains Miri once again highlighted its tradition of excellence by emerging as the school with the best SPM 2011 result in this division.

In making this announcement yesterday, its principal Serina Sauni said she was very proud of the school’s achievement which was made possible by the hard work of both students and teachers.

“I’m very happy to inform that our school’s academic quality has gone up once again.

“For a school like ours, achieving 100 per cent pass rate is a must, but the most important part is ensuring that the school has a good percentage of students scoring straight As,” she said.

She disclosed that 21.7 per cent or 18 out of 83 students of the school who sat for the examination last year scored straight As.

The school’s straight As students are Dayang Hazirah Awang Mahsen, Eva Maria Eeyah Unyat, Freddy Laing Ajeng, Mahfuzah Yahya, Mohd Faliq Sulaiman, Mohd Miqdad Yusree, Mohd Muzani Mohamad Saperi, Mohd Amirul Adli Morsidi, Mohd Tufail Sulong, Muhammad Assyukri Ahyat, Muhammad Syahiran Anas, Nur Bashirah Shafian, Nur Fathiah Waziralilah, Nur Wahida Che Zulkifli, Siti Nabilah Abu Bakar, Syed Muhammad Syafie, Norfarrahin Nor Azhan and Khaw Soon Kai.

The average grade (GPS) for the school this year was also better as it was 1.86 compared to last year’s 2.30.

“I think one of the important elements that help our students do well in their studies is sports.

“We believe that by being active in sports, students will be physically and mentally healthy and this will help them focus on their study as well as becoming confident persons,” she said.

Apart from academics, Serina pointed out that SM Sains also shone in sports and was currently top in rugby in Miri.

“We are also good in hockey and recently we won a hockey championship in Labuan. Apart from that, our cricket team is also quite strong,” she disclosed further.

Meanwhile, the second school with the best SPM result in Miri this year was Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang which produced 12 straight As students.
