JOHOR BAHARU: A former postman was sentenced to death by hanging by the High Court here after being found guilty of trafficking 500 grams of ganja three years ago.

Judicial Commissioner M.Gunalan imposed the sentence on Abd Rahim M. Ali, 39, after finding that the defence failed to raise reasonable doubt on the charge.

“The defence put up by the accused was a mere denial and the explanation given by the accused when he was arrested was also illogical,” said M. Gunalan.

As soon as the sentence was read, the wife of the accused fainted while Abd Rahim hugged and kissed his children who were crying.

Abd Rahim was charged with trafficking 500 grams of ganja at a house at Jalan Impian 2/18, Taman Impian Jaya, Seelong, Kulaijaya at 8pm on Jan 10, 2009. He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which is punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same act and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code which carried the mandatory death sentence.

On June 29, 2010, the accused was acquitted and discharged by the High Court here before he was ordered to enter his defence by the Court of Appeals.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Iskandar Ahmad appeared for the prosecution while the accused was represented by counsel Mohd Hidhir Mustapha. — Bernama
