Northern region likely to give netball championship a miss due to lack of funds

MIRI: Due to shortage of funds, Miri division is likely to give the up-coming Inter-Division Netball competition a miss.

“We currently do not have enough fund to send a team to participate in the Inter-Division Netball championship.

“This is all due to budget constraint,” said Miri Inter-School Netball tournament coordinator Law Ik Woung.

Law was met at the opening of the 2012 Miri Inter-School Netball tournament which kicked off yesterday.

She was asked to comment whether the on-going tournament was a platform to choose best players to represent Miri in the inter-division meet.

For the record, a total of 350 students from 17 secondary schools in Miri division are participating in the tournament from March 27 to 29 with SMK Dato Permaisuri as the host venue for the annual event.

“The netball competition has the U-15 and U-18 categories.

“Each schools send two teams for each event, with 17 teams in the U-15 and 18 teams in the U-18, which make up to a total of 35 teams altogether,” informed Law.

She said the participating schools were SMK Subis, SMK Sains, SM Vokasional, SMK Merbau, SMK Long Lama, SMK Riam, SMK Luak, SMK Bekenu, SMK Agama, SMK Chung Hua, SMK St Joseph, SMK Lutong, SM Suai, SMK Bakong, SMK St Columba, Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang and SMK Lopeng.

Law also revealed that the tournament was organised to encourage students, especially girls, to participate in sports as well as to promote healthy lifestyle.
