SIBU: The state Education Department aims to make Sarawak an all-rounded powerhouse in the country in the fields of academics, sports and co-curriculum activities.

Explaining their battle-cry ‘Menjulang Sarawak’ to The Borneo Post, its director Abdillah Adam said it was aimed to elevate the state to be among the best in the country.

“Starting this year, we have a theme to bring Sarawak to the forefront of academics, sports and co-curriculum activities in the country.

“We have sounded our battle-cry and from this year forth, we target to elevate the state from the lower ranks (in terms of academics) to higher ranks, positioning ourselves (Sarawak) as an all rounded powerhouse.

“I have confidence that Sarawak will be moving up the ranks but everybody must work hard,” he said when met at the prize presentation cum closing ceremony of the state-level ‘School Consumer Club Interactive Challenge Competition 2012’,
at a leading hotel here last Saturday.

The programme was organised by Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) in collaboration with Ministry of Education.

To ensure that they were on track to reach the target, Abdillah stressed that headmasters, principals, teachers and education officers needed to be aligned towards the theme.

“The way I see it, if we all work hard and in a concerted manner, we can achieve what we have set out to do. With every one aligned to the objective, you can expect to hear more good news from Sarawak,” he enthused.

Towards this end, he was also pleased to note the state’s improvement in sports.

“In sukan (sports) now we are doing very well; we achieved good results for aquatics, volley ball, ping pong, squash and gymnastics at national level.

“Last year, in the 24 sporting events, we were placed third behind Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. And this year, we hope to better our achievements,” he said.

On the ‘School Consumer Club Interactive Challenge Competition 2012’, he expressed confidence that the state team could bring glory to Sarawak by becoming the national champion.

Meanwhile, in his closing remarks earlier, Abdillah said the objective of the programme was to educate and disseminate extensively awareness of consumerism among students.

“This will help develop their creativity, innovativeness and potential, in particular, pertaining to consumerism,” he added.
