100 made homeless in Likas fire

KOTA KINABALU: About 100 people were made homeless when a fire destroyed their houses at Kampung Cenderamata II in Kampung Likas here, yesterday.

The incident saw 11 semi-concrete houses and three vehicles, namely a Perodua Kancil, a Perodua Viva and a van, were destroyed in the fire which started around 4.15pm from one of the houses.

No casualty was reported.

According to Hajah Aisah, 52, she heard commotions outside her home and decided to have a look.

“I heard people yelling ‘fire, fire’ so I went to have a look and saw one of the houses on fire.

“I ran back into my house and tried to save some documents and belongings and almost got burned, but thank God nothing happened,” she said, adding that she was home alone while her husband and children were working and studying when the incident happened.

Meanwhile, Fire and Rescue Services Department public relations officer Mohd Affendy Ramin, who was at the scene, said the department received a distress call at 4.20pm.

“Four fire engines from Lintas and Sembulam with 21 personnel were rushed to the scene and managed to put the fire under control by 5.13pm,” he said, adding that the cause of fire and total loss were still under investigation.

A Perodua Kancil car was also destroyed in the fire which saw 11 houses razed to the ground at Kampung Cenderamata II.
