KUCHING: Sixty-three Arts and Design Faculty students of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) are exhibiting their art works of international standard at the state library here.

The exhibition, showcasing artistic masterpieces by the university’s final-year diploma students in Fine Arts and Graphics Design and Digital Media programmes together for the first time, will be held till Thursday to promote arts among the youths.

“This exhibition is not only held to reward the students for their hard work in creating masterpieces, but also to teach them to be more liberal and creative in their thinking.

“As arts students, it is important that they are creative and have opportunities to display their works,” said UiTM Sarawak rector Prof Dato Jamil Hamali when officiating at the opening of the exhibition yesterday.

Lecturer-in-charge of the project, Clement Jimel, meanwhile told the press that the students’ works were equivalent to the work of degree-level students of international standards.

CREATIVE: Sabaruddin’s art work can be seen behind him. The theme of the exhibition is ‘Ranting’ (branches).

“Some of the works at the exhibition could easily fetch RM500 a piece,” he said.

Clement, a Graphic Design and Digital Media lecturer said that his students would take this opportunity to display their final-year projects on company and business logo designs for interested participating companies.

Clearly impressed with the art works on display, UiTM lecturer Vincent Wong said that the students did exceptionally well considering the faculty’s lack of modern facilities.

Among the fine arts on display at the exhibition include a glass and wood sculpture by 21-year-old Bidayuh lass Linda Jimek. Called Cube of Confusion, she described how her masterpiece resembled the reflection of her feeling and outlooks on today’s modern society.

The sculpture also represented her feelings on the need to bridge the development gap of her Bau society with others.

Sabaruddin Hesamuddin, 21, with his arts display of ‘Siapa Lebih Berkuasa’ (who is more powerful), exhibits paintings and sculptures depicting Iban folklore’s Raja Merom and Rawing.

Paintings entitled ‘Checkmate’ and ‘Freedom’ depict the duo’s battle for supremacy which was eventually won by Rawing. His mix media paintings were completed with mural paint, acrylic, spray paint and (black and white).
