KUCHING: The ‘YOUnity for Charity 2012’, which was held at the Kuching Integrated Recreation Centre (KIRC) yesterday, saw a huge turnout by members of the public, especially teenagers.

More than 400 people, including students, showed up for the one-day event which featured activities such as skateboarding competition, skateboarding clinics conducted by professional players, singing, and musical instrument performances.

There was even a flea market.

The relatively big number of people who showed up demonstrated their high spirit and preparedness to help those in need. The person-in-charge of the flea market, Stacy Gregory, enthused that some visitors came as early as 6am.

“This is the first time we hold such an activity, and we might turn it into an annual affair if the response is good. I believe such an event can serve as a platform for youths to mingle around, help preserve unity, and at the same time do something charitable for the less fortunate,” said Stacy, adding that proceeds collected yesterday would be given to the Kuching Autistic Association (KAA).

Stacy, who is also one of the organising committee members, is a graduate from Curtin University in Miri.  She said she believed that youths should start doing charity work from young as this would be good for the creation of a caring society and be models for future generations.

The organising committee, she said, had reached out to youths through word-of-mouth and the social media network such as Facebook and Twitter.

She was thankful to sports personality Dato Patrick Liew, who was the event’s patron, for letting them use KIRC free of charge.
