KUCHING: SMK Lundu is on good footing to become a sports powerhouse after its students won unprecedented titles in the various MSSS sport’s meets.

At the recent Kuching division Inter-School, Track and Field championships at the Stadium Negeri, athletes from SMK Lundu bagged an impressive gold medal haul to emerge as a new force to be reckoned with in sports.

Their exploits had gone unnoticed as eleven athletes from the school were selected to represent Kuching in the Inter-Division meet on May 8-12 in Sibu. SMK Lundu’s football and netball teams also won the MSSS U-18 Inter-School championship titles.

In the U-18 football tournament, SMK Lundu edged SM St Joseph 6-5 through penalty shoot out to lift the aged group title at SMK Tun Abg Haji Openg (TAHO) football field. The school had earlier beat the same opponent in the preliminary round.

In the final, SM St Joseph drew the first blood in the 16th minute through Amizul Shafizan.

SMK Lundu doubled their efforts to equalise and in the 30th minute, Hazeri Saat’s unstoppable grounder from 20-metre sailed past SM St. Joseph’s goalie and into the net.

During extra time, skipper Addy Edmond fired SMK Lundu into the lead. A counter-attack by SM St Joseph saw Amizul Shafizan’s volley cancelling the lead that forced the match to be decided via penalty kicks.

Custodian Edward Kasau was the hero for saving SM St Joseph’s last spot kick and with it the championship crown.

SMK Lundu’s  girls continued the school’s winning streak by winning the U-18 netball title when they beat host SMK Pending 14-7 in the final.
