KUCHING: ROS senior assistant director reveals six parties from S’wak applying for approval are waiting for final nod from Home Ministry.

The coming parliamentary election in the state looks set to see a crowded field, as six political parties from the state have applied for registration with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

This was disclosed to The Borneo Post by the ROS senior assistant director (in charge of societies) Desmond Das yesterday.

He added that the parties were Sarawak Workers Party (SWP), Parti Ekonomi Rakyat Sarawak Bersatu (PERSB); Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBM); Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS Baru); People’s Alliance for Justice and Peace Party (Peace Party) and Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras).

Das also revealed that all the six parties had fulfilled ‘Schedule 1’ of ROS requirements which among others cleared their proposers of any criminal activities and corruption.

Another factor the ROS has to take into account in approving applications by political parties is the financial standing of the proposed parties and Das said all six of the applicants fulfilled this requirement.

“These proposed parties have strong financial backgrounds and that’s a very important consideration for any political party to get registered,” he said.

With all the six proposed parties meeting the conditions set by ROS, Das believed the possibility of them being registered in time for the coming general election was very high because now they only needed the nod from the Ministry of Homes Affairs.

“All their applications are awaiting approval from the policy makers. In this case the Ministry of Home Affairs,” Das said.

When asked who the people behind the proposals of the parties were, Das said several were, ‘former political leaders’ while others were professionals, businessmen and plantations owners.

“As far as we are concerned, they have met out requirements. But the final decision now lies in the hands of the policy makers,” he reiterated.

Earlier he refuted claims that ROS had approved the registration of Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) saying that it was one of six political parties from the state awaiting approval from the Registrar of Societies (ROS) headquarters in Putrajaya.

He also said some of the people behind the registration of the party had moved on to other political organizations.
