Families of victims commemorate Titanic tragedy in Lebanon

RASHAYA EL WADI, Lebanon: Villagers of Kfarmishki and Hardin in Lebanon on Monday held a remembrance ceremony for the 24 victims from the two villages aboard the gigantic ship Titanic that sank in the North Atlantic a century ago, Xinhua news agency reported.
On April 14, 1912, the Titanic ran into an iceberg on its maiden voyage and in the early hours of April 15, 1912, the ” unsinkable ship” sank in the frigid waters south of Newfoundland.

Only 705 of its 2,223 passengers survived the tragedy.

Kfarmishki lost 13 of its residents while Hardin lost 11 in the accident.

Khlail Saikali, a family member of some of the victims, told Xinhua news agency that no remains were found of his relatives and no compensation was paid to the family.

Film director James Cameron commemorated the tragedy in the movie “Titanic,” which was a hit in Lebanon as well as many parts of the world. –Bernama
