HARARE: A group of Midlands State University (MSU) students has invented a machine that converts waste plastic into diesel, according to Zimbabwean news agency (New Ziana).

MSU students projects director Isheunesu Chaka said the machine could convert 60 kilograms of plastic waste into 60 litres of diesel.

He said a model being built costs about US$2,000 to complete and the Building Opportunities on Student Talent- Students in Free Enterprise (BOOST -SIFE) team of students is spearheading the project.

“The team is piloting the project in Senga high density suburb near the university,” he said.

The conversion process would also produce by-products that include candle wax and low cost floor polish.

Chaka said the project had been entered and had since qualified for the semi-final round of the global Dell Social Innovation Challenge.

“The Senga community will benefit through revenue generation, job creation and a clean environment as the waste will be collected from unattended dumps in the community, said Chaka.

“The profits that the project makes will go towards infrastructural development of the community,” he said. –Bernama
