DNA centre for Sabah police by year end

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police are expected to have their own DNA centre by the end of this year, said Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib.

Hamza said the centre would be set up in stages at all police headquarters in the country.

“I have not received any instructions from Bukit Aman on the location where the DNA centre would be set up in Sabah.

“If forensic officers had made a visit to Tuaran district, then maybe the centre would be set up there,” he said after visiting Sabah Women and Children’s Hospital in Likas yesterday.

It is learnt a DNA centre is expected to be set up in Tuaran district after some officers from Bukit Aman made a visit to Sabah recently.

According to Hamza, it would be ideal for Sabah to have its very own DNA centre.

“Normally, all DNA samples would be sent to Cheras, Selangor, for analysis but with such a centre here in Sabah, it would speed up police investigation based on evidence collected and result obtained,” he said.

Hamza said a DNA centre is part of the police forensic department which collects and analyses DNA samples, photos, finger prints and other evidence.

Also present during the visit were Hamza’s wife Datin Alauyah Mohamed, State Deputy Police Commissioner SAC II Datuk Tan Kok Liang and other police officers.
