Eight teams in the fray at Piala President

KUCHING: The Piala President-LI NING badminton tournament this year may not have attracted the interest of many teams but the organiser, Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) have promised quality contest among the eight teams who have signed up.

The teams taking part in the revived inter-club competition to be held at the SBA Hall along Jalan Lapangan Terbang from April 20-22 are Pacific Badminton Management, Everspring, BBA Bintulu, SIOL, Club Ace A, Club Ace B, Sri Tabuan, and DM Sri Tabuan.

The inter-club tournament is a team event that is open to all SBA divisional affiliates, clubs and teams. Each team comprises eight registered players with a maximum of 11. The team event comprises men’s singles open, boys U-18 singles, veteran men’s doubles (combined age of 100 with minimum age of 45), boys U-18 doubles and men’s doubles open.

Format of play is based on group league or round robin depending on the number of participating teams while competition is in accordance with rules and regulations set by SBA or other regulations that it may approved from time to time, and the Laws of badminton as adopted by Badminton World Federation.

The champions will receive RM6,000, with RM3,000 going to the runners-up while third placing will get RM1,500 and fourth placing, RM1,000. LI NING has also agreed to come in as a product sponsor and the brand’s shuttle cocks will be used throughout the competition.

Special products vouchers will also be awarded to the best-18 performers in this tournament.

Piala President was last held in 2009. The champions then were G-Builder, runners-up Masja Sa, third KBA (A), and fourth KBA (B).

Meanwhile, SBA’s council meeting will be held this Sunday to discuss on the latest development of badminton in Sarawak.
