‘Pua Kumbu Weaving Contest’ calling for entries

SIBU: ‘Pua kumbu’ weavers are invited to join the ‘Pua Kumbu Weaving Contest’ held in conjunction with the state-level Gawai Dayak celebration in Sibu.

Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) chairperson Alice Jawan said the contest offered handsome prizes for the top 10 finalists.

“The champion will receive RM3,000 while the second place winner will get RM2,000. It is RM1,000 for the third prize winner.

“The top three will also walk home with a trophy each,” she said.

The fourth to sixth place winners will be given RM500 each and those placed seventh to tenth get RM200 each.

The competition is jointly organised by SIDS Sibu and Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu to encourage more Dayaks to be actively involved in the handicraft industry.

The ‘pua kumbu’ of the participants will be displayed in an exhibition at Sibu Cultural and Heritage Centre in Wong Nai Siong Road here from May 19 to 24 for judging.

“Dato Paduka Empiang Jabu will officiate at the soft launching of the exhibition on May 19 at 9am,” she said.

To participate, contestants must send their ‘pua kumbu’ together with their registration forms before May 10 to the contest secretariat via either Teresa Suli Noel, c/o 2-F, Bougenvilla 7B, Old Oya Road, Sibu (010-4099100) or Angeline Uchi Maseng, c/o Sibu Rural District Council, Wisma Sanyan, 96000 Sibu (016-8825861).
