Students to get entrepreneurial exposure during studies — Khaled

PETALING JAYA: The Higher Education Ministry will ensure that students are exposed to entrepreneurial elements during their studies to increase the percentage of graduates becoming entrepreneurs six months after graduation from 1.6 percent to 5.0 per cent.

“We recognise the need to encourage a more entrepreneurial culture and develop the necessary skills, attitudes and behaviours to prepare our young generation to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities,” said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Khaled Nordin.

Each public university now has set up a centre of entrepreneurship and some financial allocation had also been provided.

The higher learning institutions are also encouraged to forge closer ties with industries to assist in the agenda, he said in his keynote address titled ‘Higher Education and Economic Growth – Building Innovative Human Capital’ on the second day of the 16th Malaysian Education Summit. — Bernama

He said social entrepreneurship in higher education creates public value, enhances the student’s experience, provides a route for research impact and practice based research, as well as adding value to teaching, professional and academic roles.

“In this aspect, we will be able to tap into the bright young minds from the universities as well as spur and inculcate an enterprising culture among the youth. This can create opportunities for them to extend their ideas for sustainable venture to the community,” he said. — Bernama
