39 to vie for Kumang, Keling Gawai at preliminary round today

MIRI: The preliminary round for 39 contestants of ‘2012 Kumang Gawai’ would be held at Bintang Megamall here starting at 6.30pm this evening.

They are for various categories – ‘Kumang Iban’ (20), Kumang Keligit (13) and Kumang Bidayuh (6).

Also joining the elimination rounds are nine young men who would vie for ‘Keling/Belawan Gawai’ contest.

Members of the public should not miss the opportunity to witness their favourites adorned in their beautiful attire staging the catwalk.

A spokeswoman said there would also be a blood donation drive and children colouring contest the same day at the new wing of Bintang Megamall, commencing at 9.30am.

She appealed to the public for support to ensure that they could achieve their target.

“We expect to collect at least 50 pints of blood at the campaign later,” she said when contacted yesterday.

The blood donation exercise and the colouring contest were among the activities of ‘2012 Miri Divisional Pre-Gawai Dayak Celebration’ while ‘Kumang Gawai’ and ‘Keling Gawai’ competitions were the highlight.

The next event would be a visit to Pediatric Ward at Miri Hospital the following day (April 29) at 2pm.

“This is part of our `caring and sharing’ rounds,” the spokeswoman explained.

Also in the line- up are stage cultural performances, entertainment and lucky draws with many attractive prizes to be won.

The Gawai do would be held at Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club on May 6.

It was being  organised by Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA), Miri branch in collaboration with Miri Resident Office and assisted by various Miri-based  ethnic associations.
