Two contractors given red card

MIRI: Two contractors have been ‘red carded’ by Miri City Council (MCC) this year for poor work performance.

Mayor Lawrence Lai, in issuing a stern warning yesterday, said MCC would have no qualms in terminating the services of any contractor who produced sub-standard work.

“So far, two contractors have been issued red cards, meaning service termination, by us so far this year. We will not hesitate to take similar action against others who fail to show good work performance or failed to meet the stipulated service standards,” he told reporters after chairing a full council meeting.

Lai said when shoddy work is detected, a yellow card would be issued. The next time it happened again, a second yellow card in the form of a show-cause letter would be issued.

“If they failed to comply for the third time, it will be a red card. Their service would be terminated.”

Lai said MCC had many local contractors under its belt to help keep the city in top shape. These contractors are divided into three categories: grass cutting and drainage clearing; rubbish collection and landscaping.

“All contractors must deliver their services efficiently and professionally as it is important to maintain our good image. We do not want public funds to be wasted.”

To ensure that contractors toe the line, Lai urged members of all Resident Committees (RC) here to be the eyes and ears of MCC.
