KUCHING: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has rated the opposition’s chance of winning the general election at 53 per cent.

He said the chances of forming the government could be higher “if the election is not rigged”.

Addressing a media conference at Kuching International Airport (KIA) on his arrival here yesterday, Anwar said the people were now ready for change.

“Now is the defining moment in our (opposition) history and not withstanding the election fraud, we will make history in the coming election.

“We started at 35 per cent, then 48 per cent and 50 per cent; now we have 53 per cent,” Anwar said, adding the people have a better understanding now and would not retreat.

According to him, the people were ready to change after having enough of corruption and power abuse.

The Permatang Pauh MP said PR (Pakatan Rakyat) would finalise the list of candidates in one or two weeks’ time; many seats, including in Sarawak, had not been decided on yet.

He appealed to opposition partners PKR, DAP and PAS to work together at all costs and not issue conflicting statement that will become a tool for Umno.

On the recent Bersih 3.0 rally, Anwar said it was proof that the people wanted justice and freedom.

The rally was to demand for a fair and clean election.

“When we talk about democracy and freedom, there must be fair election,” he said.

Anwar told the conference he would rather focus on working hard for the coming general election, and would not counter the various allegations against him by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
