MIRI: Waste disposal cells and waste transportation methodology to the landfill in Subak will be constantly monitored.

Miri MP Ahmad Lai Bujang said cooperation between Miri City Council (MCC) and Subis District Council (SDC) is essential in coping with any problem arising from the landfill.

“We are concerned about any problem brought up by village folks at the nearby disposal area and along the transportation route,” he said after attending Sibuti dumpsite management seminar held at SDC Bekenu last Friday.

Moreover, he said, both MCC and SDC would monitor the practice of garbage transportation and disposal by the appointed contractors.

“The leachate causing the foul smells and flies in the area and along the route are the main problems faced by the nearby villagers,” Ahmad Lai said.

According to him, the contractors are urged improve their disposal method as well as upgrade the garbage trucks.

Commenting on the new fourth waste disposal cell, he revealed that it is built with the latest technology.

“The contractor has stated that the fourth cell, expected to be completed by December, is now 28 per cent completed,” he added.

The landfill site in Subak was first operational in 2003, where the three cells are almost used up.

The new fourth cell with a capacity bigger than the existing three combined, is more efficient and could meet the waste disposal demand for the next five years.

“We will conduct a meeting in three months’ time to ensure the project is run well and the monitoring thorough,” he said.

Also present at the seminar was Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat.
