Rally aimed to turn Dataran Merdeka into Tahrir Square — Ahmad Maslan

BATU PAHAT: Organiser of the April 28 rally in Kuala Lumpur did not intend to assemble in peace as they wanted to turn Dataran Merdeka into Tahrir Square in Egypt via rioting.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Ahmad Maslan said it was ridiculous for the opposition backed rally organiser for equating Dataran Merdeka to Tahrir Square.

“They (rally organiser and participants) wanted to occupy Dataran Merdeka  for four days and do things to smear the country,” he said at Johor social media seminar in Parit Raja near here yesterday.

Ahmad said the opposition wanted to ‘conquer’ Dataran Merdeka until May 1 to  turn the country’s historical site into Tahrir Square and topple the government.

This was confirmed by banners written with the words “Merdeka Square Is Our Tahrir Square” on the tents of rally participants.

He said the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak centres  on the wellbeing of the people unlike the administration of Hosni Mubarak, the former president of Egypt.

“Hosni Mubarak ruled Egypt for about 30 years while the leadership of our prime minister (Najib) is only three years’ old.

“In this short period, he has implemented various transformation programmes to improve the wellbeing of people in this country.”  The people should reject the opposition struggle and violent rally led by opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and rally organiser Datuk S Ambiga, he said. — Bernama
