Veterans run to maintain health

SIBU: The veterans participating in the ‘Jubilee Park Sarawak Health Marathon 2012’ held at Jubilee Park yesterday as a way to maintain their health.

The champion in the Men’s Veteran Category (7km) Lee Kim Hing from Sibu Marathon Sports Club said he ran not to grab any of the top three positions.

“I run to maintain my level of good health. If I can maintain my level of speed, that means I am fit and healthy.”

“Today, I am very happy to be able to maintain my level of speed and it is double joy for me to reach the finishing line first,’ he added in jest.

The 61-year-old Lee had been taking part in marathons since he was 37 years old.

“Running or as what they call it today as jogging is one of the best form of exercise to maintain a healthy mind and body.”

“Jogging is so convenient that we can do it anytime and anywhere,” he said.

Lee who had won top placing in various marathons held here added that he jogged almost everyday.

“I jogging for four to five kilometres in the evening at 5pm,” he said.

Lee added that besides jogging he consume vegetables and drink plenty of water.

For his friend Arshad Lai Wasli,jogging help a person to keep a healthy mind and body.

“Like my friend, Lee, I go for marathon because I want to enjoy a healthy life by running.”

“Even though I did not win, I do not mind as my objective of taking part is for health and fun and also to make new friends,” he added with a broad smile.

“By having new friends, I can exchange and share constructive ideas on how best I can improve my run and health,” he pointed out.

He has being taking part in marathon and other running events since 1975.

“Apart from jogging, I also participate in cycling events as it delivers a different level of challenges and fun,” said the cheerful Arshad.

He jogged for 30 to 45 minutes daily from 5pm to 6pm.

“As my age catching up, I also do consume supplement to maintain a healthy life” he added.

Both veterans advised youth who wish to take up jogging either as a hobby or for competition to go for it, as it is one of the best form of exercise that help to maintain their healthy mind and body.
