KUCHING: Highly rated team Mohawks outran Gypsies 2-1 on Sunday at Kuching Politeknik field to book a place in the final of the Kuching Open Softball Championship.

Mohawks’ players comprised mostly of ex-Thomians topped Group B by beating Spartans 20-3, Ronin-Mukah Politeknik (PMU) 20-3 runs and KRP 20-3 runs in the group stage. As leaders of the group they were drawn to meet Gypsies who topped Group A.

The winning run was won by Mohawks in the seventh inning when Gypsies’ ball was hit high and the fall was caught by Mohawks’ mid-field player making it 2-1 and giving them the runs in the final.

Mohawks team skipper Alethea Beryl Purong disclosed that the team was formed in 2000 but only trained seriously for the Sarawak Open in 2011.

“Our team, mostly former students of St. Thomas Kuching, age between 30 to 16 year old, only started to train every weekends before the Sarawak Open in July 2011 at St. Thomas school’s field,” said the 26-year old sports science graduate from Universiti Malaya.

According to Alethea compared to the other teams competing in the championship, his team is self-sponsored.

“The players in the team have to bear for the cost to buy equipment required by softball and it is just for the passion of the sports,” he told The Borneo Post at Politeknik Kuching field on Sunday.
