KOTA KINABALU: Drugs are being sold at illegal squatters along Jalan Sepanggar where customers use flames from lighters as signals for drug purchase.
Revealing this yesterday, Karambunai assemblywoman Datuk Hajah Jainab Datuk Seri Panglima Ahmad Ayid said she had notified the police and City Hall regarding the matter but it was still ongoing.
Jainab, who is also Assistant Minister of Resource Development and Information Technology, said the public had complained on Facebook or notified her of the drug transactions going on in the area but the identities of drug dealers were unknown.
She pointed out that the issue had reached a dangerous level, as some drug dealers were lingering outside school fences to sell drugs to students.
Jainab added that every several minute there would be one person tested positive for drugs in his or her urine during road blocks, some of them even locals.
“Maybe it is because of stress, or they want to try drugs, peer pressure, or dealers selling drugs in villages, but they don’t realize that drugs can get them addicted.
“A lot of people don’t realize that drugs are dangerous.”
If there is no demand, there will be no supply of drugs, she said in an interview at the Drug Free Community programme (DAMAI) in Menggatal here yesterday.
The programme also included a 10,000 steps walk to promote healthy living earlier yesterday morning.
Earlier in her speech, Jainab urged the public to be aware of dealers attempting to sell drugs online, at clubs, cyber cafes and on the streets.
She said several areas in Karambunai and Inanam were black areas due to negative activities, including drugs.
Jainab also advised the people not to fall for cheap supplements as they could pay a higher price when the supplements affect their health.
Also present was City Hall director-general Datuk Yeo Boon Hai, who is also the chairman of Malaysia Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam) Kota Kinabalu.
