PARIS: Outgoing French leader Nicolas Sarkozy’s government officially resigned on Thursday ahead of president-elect Francois Hollande’s inauguration next week, the presidency said.

Sarkozy accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Francois Fillon’s government, the Elysee Palace said in a statement, though the cabinet will continue to handle day-to-day affairs until Hollande’s May 15 inauguration.

Final results confirmed by France’s Constitutional Council on Thursday showed Socialist Hollande winning Sunday’s second-round run-off vote against right-winger Sarkozy with 51.6 per cent of the vote. — AFP
