Beijing crackdown on illegal immigrants

BEIJING: Beijing police are conducting a 100-day campaign to crack down on illegal immigrants, according to the public security bureau.

The campaign, launched Tuesday, would focus on illegal entry, overstaying and illegal employment of foreigners, the three major problems brought by illegal immigrants to the capital, a spokesman of the bureau said.

There is currently a stable daily population of nearly 200,000 foreigners in Beijing.

The capital has reported 13,000 cases of illegal entry, overstaying and illegal employment involving foreigners from more than 100 countries since 2008, according to exit-entry statistics.

Most of the illegal immigrants have no source of income, stable residence or normal employment, and some of them commit crimes and threaten public security in the capital. — BERNAMA
