DOUBLE MOTHER’S DAY JOY: Local Catholics gather for prayers on Mother’s Day.

SIBU: The Catholic Church here celebrated double Mother’s Day joy on Sunday as the celebration coincides with the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima.

More than 100 members from three presidiums of Legion of Mary — Mother of Good Counsel, Mother of Justice and Queen of All Saints — gathered at the compound of Sacred Heart Cathedral to pray to Mother Mary, their spiritual mother.

Head of Mother of Good Counsel presidium Philip Kong, who coordinated the spiritual celebration said they had gathered in front of the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima at 7pm to light candles, recite rosary prayers and sing hymns.

“This is a day of double blessings and joy. Apart from the Legion of Mary members, faithful also joined us in the prayer gathering.”

Kong said just as their prayers ended in the half-hour session, strong wind and rain followed.

He said the cathedral also held three rosary prayer sessions on weekdays in May as the Church had dedicated the month to Mother Mary in line with the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima celebration.

He said members of the church would gather for weekday gathering after the morning and evening Masses and at 7pm.

He said St Teresa’s Church at Sungei Merah also held the weekday prayer session at 6pm.

The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima to commemorate the apparition of Mother Mary in Fatima, Portugal, on May 13, 1917 to three shepherd’s children, asking the world to pray for peace and repentance.

This was followed with the monthly apparitions until Oct 13.
