KUALA LUMPUR: A lorry driver pleaded not guilty at the magistrates’ Court here yesterday to a charge of housebreaking and escaping with numerous valuables worth RM35,000, last year.

R Balakrishan, 38, who was charged, with another person still at large, broke into the house belonging to Chui Kok Leong, 51, an insurance agent, and took seven wristwatches of various brands, 23 gold necklaces, eight gold rings, cash of RM200, a DVD player, a laptop and three types of MP3 players.

He was charged with committing the offence at No 92, Jalan Mutiara Barat 6, Taman Mutiara, Cheras, near here, between 6.40am and 6.30pm on Aug 19, 2011.

If found guilty, Balakrishnan can be jailed a maximum of 14 years and fined or caned.

Earlier, prosecution officer Insp Zuraimi Kamarozzaman offered bail of RM15,000 with a one surety but defence counsel S Narasimham asked for a lower bail as Balakrishnan had five schoolgoing children while his wife was not working.

Magistrate Nur Azura Murah allowed Balakrishnan bail at RM12,000 with one surety and fixed June 14 for re-mention of the case. — Bernama
