GEORGE TOWN: Penang Umno yesterday denied any association with the gathering organised by the Penang branch of the Malay right-wing group Perkasa at the residence of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng last Thursday.

Its chairman, Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman, said Perkasa was a non-governmental organisation over which Umno had no jurisdiction.

Speaking at a Barisan Nasional (BN) news conference also attended by Penang BN chairman Teng Chang Yeow, he said Umno did not agree to politics descending to the level of harassing families and added that it was something outside the political parameters agreed to by the BN.

More than 70 Perkasa members had gathered peacefully last Thursday in front of Lim’s residence and at Komtar, where the chief minister’s office is located, calling on him to step down allegedly for having failed to take care of the interests of the people of Penang. — Bernama
