SIBU: Sibu Football Association (FA) has applied for the formation of Sibu Futsal Association, with FA secretary Abdul Hajis holding great hope that the Registrar of Societies will give the green light soon.

The new association would be an affiliate of the Sibu FA.

“When the Sibu Futsal Association is registered, it will handle futsal as well as beach football activities here,” Abdul Hajis told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He said the futsal association would take away some loads off the FA’s shoulders when it took charge of the futsal activities now handled by the FA.

“Sibu FA is very much pre-occupied with football development and tournaments like Rossi Cup, Sibu Football League, Sibu FA Cup and many others. We feel that a separate body is needed to organise and properly manage futsal activities, “ he said.

Hajis believed that the existence of a futsal association would better promote the game among the youths, and raise the standard of the sport.

“This will help us to be better prepared when futsal is listed as a competition game of Sukma,” he added.

On the recently concluded P211 Lanang Sibu Open Futsal Championship at Bukit Lima Stadium, Hajis said the overall performance of the players was satisfactory.

“We had attracted a good number of teams to the competition, but the number of squad for the women’s category was slightly below expectation,” he revealed.

A total of 19 teams participated in the men’s category while six teams competed in the women’s.

Hajis was especially excited to see a women’s team from Sibu ITA College at the recent competition.

“Though the players did not have sufficient time to train and gel, they displayed true grit and the Sarawakian fighting spirit,” described Hajis.

On the Sarawak Futsal Cup in Kuching on May 25 – 27, Abdul Hajis urged the four Sibu teams competing to give their best to make Sibu proud.

TZ and Nazario are the two men’s teams while Dsyco and Sixteen 5 FC are the women’s squads.
