KUCHING: Sarawak is expected to host Malaysia Games (Sukma) in 2016.

Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin said this in response to a question posed by Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi (BN-Pantai Damai) in the Q&A session at the DUN sitting yesterday.

He said for this year’s Sukma, which will be held in Pahang from July 7 to July 16, the state will take part in 18 sports represented by 326 athletes.

Lee is fairly confident Sarawak will excel in this year’s Sukma as the ministry, through the Sarawak State Sports Council, had been monitoring the performance of its athletes.

“With training programmes and competition exposure, the ministry is confident Sarawak will achieve success in the coming games.

“In addition, we have increased the incentive for gold medals, that is, RM5,000 for athletes winning gold for the first time and RM7,000 for athletes winning gold for the second time,” he said.
