KUANTAN: Malaysians who have registered as voters, especially in the first quarter of this year, are urged to check their details with the Election Commission (EC) before the upcoming 13th general election (GE).

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said the commission would hold a massive campaign nationwide for the purpose from June 1 to 31.

“I advise voters to review their details starting now so that it will be easy for them and the EC to make changes or updates.

“Don’t wait till polling day to check because this will make it difficult for both parties to rectify mistakes as we are not sure when the GE will be called,” he told reporters after attending the EC’s Excellent Service Award and Innovation Day 2011 function, here yesterday.

Abdul Aziz also said the EC also hoped that the 100,000 voters identified having duplicate addresses, could update their information to avoid any problems during the election.

“This is because details or amendments cannot be made online, through SMS or by calling the EC, and according to our laws, the EC has no right to change their addresses or other details. Only the voter can do so,” he said.

He said voters who wished to make changes must fill up Form A, whereby changes made before the second quarter ended would be displayed in the third week of August.

Regarding election campaigns, Abdul Aziz said the EC will decide whether or not to make it compulsory for political parties contesting in the election to put the name of their printer on posters.

“This will be finalised tomorrow during an EC panel meeting. We had retracted the directive in the past, but for the next election, posters with party slogans that do not bear the name of the party and printer may be taken down,” he added.

However, he said this was not necessary for posters without slogans but only had a candidate’s photo and the contested area. — Bernama
