KUCHING: The Ministry of Welfare, Women and Family Development plans to set up a ‘taska’ (nursery) in Wisma Wanita, Petra Jaya near here to facilitate working parents particularly public servants.

This new child care centre is scheduled for operation in August following the establishment of Taska Permata 1Malaysia Kasih Laila I and II.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said child care centre represented a support system for working parents, and as such, the government encouraged both public and private sectors to go for it.

“We hope other agencies will also set up a ‘taska’ for their personnel where both spouses are working. We are aware that some private corporations are doing the same, but are not reporting to us.

“Hence, I urge those running their own taska to register with the authorities so that the ministry has the statistics of it,” she told reporters after presenting the mock key for Taska Permata 1Malaysia Kasih Laila II to operator, Sarawak Single Mothers Association in the State Legislative Assembly Complex yesterday.

The federal government, through her ministry, had contributed RM162,000 towards the new taska, which would start operating at Wisma Bapa Malaysia by end of July.

Fatimah pointed out that the new child care centre was capable of taking in 25 children at any one time, depending on the age of children.

“This Taska Permata 1Malaysia Kasih Laila II will be operating in the golden triangle of Wisma Bapa Malaysia, Menara Pelita and Baitul Makmur. It is to support our working parents serving in the three areas.

“More importantly, the taska will provide employment to members of the single mothers association.”

She also pledged that her ministry would assist taska operators in registration.

Apart from offering service to public servants, Taska Permata 1Malaysia Kasih Laila II is open for eligible non-public servant households.

Parents who earn RM2,000 and below per month are welcome to send their children to the care centre.

Among those present were Bekenu assemblywoman Rosey Yunus and permanent secretary to the Ministry of Welfare, Women and Family Development Rodziah Morshidi.
