Thieves use scanners to detect laptops in vehicles – police

KOTA KINABALU: Thieves are using scanning devices that can detect laptops in vehicles parked at public places, according to state Crime Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC Omar Mamma.

These thieves would walk around the parked vehicles with the scanner and once they detect a laptop in a vehicle, they would try to break into it and steal the laptop and other items left behind by the owner, he said.

Omar said although such cases are quite new in the state, police would carry out thorough investigation into them.

He said police have so far recorded 16 such cases this year with six cases being reported in the state capital.

“Police therefore remind the public not to leave their personal belongings, especially laptops, in their vehicles unattended to avoid attracting thieves,” he said.
