NS may be made compulsory for secondary school leavers

KUANTAN: The National Service (NS) training programme in future might be made compulsory to all secondary school leavers, said NS Training Council chairman Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe.

He said the move had been discussed by the council and would be brought to the government for agreement, besides seeking feeback from the public.

“If this is approved, about 500,000 trainees will be involved in a year.

“Thus we will review the current infrastructure, whether it should be expanded to cater all the trainees,” he told reporters after visiting the Hijrah NS Camp here yesterday.

Support from parents and individuals for the move was also overwhelming, he said, adding that there was no longer unfavourable feedback on the NS programme as no 3,000 individuals volunteered to join for every new batch.

He added that the programme might also be attended by politicians nationwide, for them to see for themselves the effectiveness of the programme. — Bernama
