KOTA KINABALU: A foreign man was arrested by police for impersonating a police officer from Bukit Aman.

Three of his accomplices however managed to escape after they put up a fight with police personnel from Tanjung Aru, here on Sunday.

Deputy city police chief Superintendent M. Chandra said the incident happened when the four suspects introduced themselves as police officers from Bukit Aman during a function at Tanjung Aru on May 20.

“Police received a report from the public that some men were going around and introducing themselves as police officer.

“A team of CID police from Tanjung Aru police station then responded to the call and when questioned, the suspects claimed to be police officers from Bukit Aman.

“They (the suspects) even asked our personnel if they were police officers as our personnel were in plain clothes.

“They were however shocked and frightened when our personnel asked them to show their police identification cards as proof.

“The police only managed to arrest one of the suspects as the rest managed to escape after putting up a fight with our personnel,” said Chandra at a press conference at the city police headquarters in Karamunsing here yesterday.

Investigation of the arrested suspect found him to be an Indonesian man, aged 21, with no travel documents.

According to Chandra, interrogation on the suspect showed that he was proud to be a police officer and this led him to impersonate as an officer.

The suspect is being remanded to be investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a public servant.

Under the provision, it carries a jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both on conviction.
