KUALA LUMPUR: Five Malaysians have been selected to undertake research at two world-renowned institutes — the Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Vienna and the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva.

Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) president Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Ali said yesterday two of them are young scientists who will conduct research at IIASA for three months starting next week.

The other three are outstanding final-year undergraduate students of physics from Malaysian public universities who will conduct research at CERN for two months, also starting next week.

“This will give them the opportunity to work in a high-level research environment and broaden their research interest. This is also an opportunity for them to build contacts with the worldwide network of research community.

“We are proud they are chosen by IIASA and CERN from hundreds of applicants all over the world. We hope to get this going yearly, at least around two or three young scientists,” he told reporters at the sending off of the Malaysians at Bukit Kiara, here.

Dr Ahmad Tajuddin said the programme had been made possible through ASM’s role as a National Member Organisation of IIASA since Feb 9 this year and the Expression of Interest signed with CERN on June 23 last year. – Bernama
