Towards creating a regional ‘Indusity’ of distinction

Limkokwing Borneo is positive on Sarawak’s prospects of becoming a regional education hub since the state is a popular destination for the pursuit of higher education and many reputable universities have set up campus to offer internationally-accredited degress and diplomas.

According to a Limkokwing Borneo spokeperson, the state also offered tremendous potential for research opportunities for post-graduate programmes, having attracted international students from many parts of the world.

“They find the culture unique and live in a safe, secure environment and additonally the lower cost of living is an added advantage. We have international students from over 20 different countries mainly pursuing degree programmes such as Business Management and Information Technology. They comprise about 30 per cent of the student population.

“All our programmes are globally recognised and cultivate and promote innovation using the latest digital technology. Being industry-relevant, we apply the concept of  ‘Indusity’ which is coined from the words ‘Industry within University’ and all programmes are infused with creativity and innovation.”

While a majority of students were from Sarawak, the university also had students from neighbouring Sabah, Brunei and Kalimantan.

The University was well known for its for creating opportunities for student to participate in the innovation process. Opening students’ minds to creativity was considered an important starting point for innovation to take place. Thus students were encouraged to work on actual projects with industry professionals, the spokesperson added.

It has won 150 international awards for creativity and innovation in 2011/2012 alone which housed an award-winning online web content creation centre on campus, focused on an integrated appraoch that enabled holistic learning.

Plans for the near future included a move to a new state-of-the-art campus to be built at the second education hub near Santubong as well as expansions in other countries.

Currently the group has 30,000 students from 165 countries with off-shore campuses in the UK, China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Bostwana, Lesotho and Swaziland with degrees and diplomas delvered in 20 countries.

In Kuching programmes offered include Graphic Design, Fashion & Apparel Design, Animation & Multimedia Design, Digital Photography, Broadcasting (Radio & TV), Interior Design, Architecture Technology and Mass Communication.

It also delivers  3 +0 degrees from the Anglia Ruskin University in UK such as BA (Hons) Graphic Design, BA (Hons) Business Management, Bsc (Hons) Computer Science and Bsc (Hons) Business Information Systems. It also runs Foundation Programmes in Design, Information Technology, Business and Communications.
