MIRI: The state’s under-18 boys and girls teams were left in a lurch when they were told on Friday there is no fund for them to travel to Terengganu for the Malaysia School Sport Council (MSSM) Under 18 Inter-State Softball Championship to be held from June 4 to 9.

They were supposed to join the boys under-12 team for the championship but now it seems all their preparations have been in vain and the players are left frustrated.

Most of the players are the students of SMK St. Columba and SMK Chung Hua Miri.

They were selected for the state team based on their performance at the Miri inter-school softball tournament and the MSSM Sarawak Inter-Division Softball Tournament in Mukah in April.

President for the SMK St. Columba’s Softball Club, Arantxa Donna Tomas expressed her disappointment after being told that the federal education department did not have any budget for both teams to participate the tournament in Terengganu.

“It was really frustrating as we have prepared well for the championship. Some of us even used our own pocket money for centralised training in Kuching for the final preparation before fly to Terengganu,” she said when met during the training session at Miri Youth Centre’s field Friday.

The captains for boys/girls under 18 year old teams, Xavier Ino Lee and Gwen Pengiran could not hide their disappointment as they said they and their teams were all geared up for the tournament.

President for the Sarawak Softball Association, Ishak Abdullah who is also the coach for the teams regretted the last minute cancellation saying because of the short notice of the cancellation the association could not do anything to salvage the situation..

“The students were in the high spirit to participate in the championship and some of the players in both teams are the state’s softball feeder players for SUKMA next year,” he said.
