MIRI: Kelab Rekreasi Petroleum (KRP) is optimistic of their chances at the Gymkhana Club Miri’s Inter-club Swimming Championship on June 23-24 and the club has set a target of winning the title.

KRP coach, Mohd Faizal @ Thomas Abdullah said KRP is confident of improving its position from fourth placing last year in the championship.

“We are confident of doing much better than last year. This was based on our recent achievement as overall champion of the 3rd KRP Junior Swimming Championship 2012 on May 12,” Faizal told The Borneo Post during the appreciation dinner for the KRP swimmers and organising committee members on Sunday night.

Among those present was KRP Manager Unyat Dollah.

Faizal said that during the championship, KRP collected a total of 70 medals (31 gold, 14 silver and 25 bronze) which was 10 gold medals more compared to their nearest challenger and defending champion, Miri Amateur Swimming Association (MASA).

MASA collected 21 gold, 27 silver and 11 bronze medals, GCM – 33 medals (six gold, 12 silver and 15 bronze) while Tenby International School garnered 27 medals (six gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze).

Faizal revealed that KRP will be sending 31 swimmers to the two-day swimming meet in Miri.

“As this is a 17-year old and below championship, we can only send 31 swimmers. We have at least five leading swimmers who were the best swimmers in our recent KRP Junior championships,” he said.

The swimmers are Fatin Farahanim, Nelson Impin, Jovyn Lau Wen Yee, Haziq Haikal Sufian and Nursufinie Hafizie

Meanwhile, KRP is currently conducting “Learn to Swim Programme’ at the club for both club members and non-members from May 28-31 and July 4 -7.

“We are still accepting entry from the public on May 29 although we start the programme on Monday (May 28). The entrance fee is RM100 for non members and RM80 for members. Those interested can call 019-8882143,” informed Faizal.
