Sarawak Rugby Union not involved in friendly game, says secretary

Posted on June 1, 2012, Friday

KUCHING: Sarawak Rugby Union (SRU) yesterday announced that it is not involved in the organising of the friendly game between Rhinos RFC and Sarawak Headhunters team.

In fact, SRU was never informed by the organisers on pertinent issues regarding the upcoming game to be held at Song Kheng Hai Ground next week.

“It is very erroneous to say that the side that will be facing the visiting team is a representative side of the state under the SRU aegis,” said SRU secretary, Jim Lee in a press statement.

SRU is responding to a recent newspaper report which stated that the upcoming friendly is to be played between the Rhinos and a selection of SRU’s players.

According to Lee, SRU was never a party to the whole event be it from the organising or selection of team players for the game.

He said the local team’s coach, Michael Ting might probably be misled into believing that the organising of the game and selection of players was sanctioned by SRU.

“This is the first time SRU is made aware of the game and whoever who is organising the game should not use SRU’s name without informing and getting sanction from us,” Lee said.

He added that SRU should not be held responsible for anything untoward incidents that may occur during the game and the sole responsibility for any incident(s) or injuries to players during the game lies on the organisers. Lee pointed out that if those who are responsible for organising the game wants to say the team is a representative one, then they can do it but they should not involve SRU because all this while it has been kept in the dark with regards to the upcoming event.
