KUCHING: Two women were killed on the eve of Gawai Dayak following a three-vehicle collision at the Tapah Bazaar junction at Mile 22 Kuching-Serian Road.

The dead were identified as Nain @ Dangun Gandeng, 56, from Kampung Siol Batu in Petra Jaya and her future daughter-in-law, Candy Norbert Nuom, 24, from Kampung Subang in Padawan.

The accident occurred around 8.30pm when both victims were making their way to Kampung Subang to celebrate Gawai Dayak with family and relatives.

Nain’s son, who is Candy’s fiancé, and daughter, who were travelling in a separate vehicle behind the Proton Saga driven by Candy, said the incident occurred when an unidentified vehicle made a sudden turn into the Tapah Bazaar junction.

The siblings said the Proton Saga spun out of control in an attempt to avoid crashing into the unidentified car, but ended up in a collision with a Toyota Vios and a Perodua Myvi.

The unidentified vehicle, however, was nowhere to be seen following the horrific accident.

Bomba were summoned to extricate the victims’ bodies from the mangled Proton Saga, where paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene.

The male driver of the Vios sustained head injuries and was treated at a private hospital, while the four persons travelling in the Myvi were unharmed.

Nain’s daughter, meanwhile, disclosed    that her brother had planned to propose to Candy after Gawai Dayak.

In a separate incident, a motorcyclist died on the first day of Gawai Dayak when he was run over by a car at Mile 13 Kuching-Serian Road.

The victim was identified as Roslan Pae, 46, of Kampung Mang in Kota Samarahan.

The incident happened around 9.15pm when Roslan, a contract worker, was making his way home after finishing work.

A co-worker, who was travelling on a separate motorcycle behind the victim, said a Perodua Myvi appeared to have clipped the rear of Roslan’s machine, causing him to fall onto the road where he was subsequently run over.

The victim was rushed to the Sarawak General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries later the same night.

The driver of the car, meanwhile, headed straight to the Simpang Tiga police station where he lodged a police report over the incident.
