RENEW TIES: Ting (second right) shares some thoughts with one of the residents in Kampung Masjid Kuala Baram.

MIRI: The Dayaks while enjoying the Gawai Dayak celebration should make the festive season an ideal platform to renew existing relationships with friends of all races.

Political secretary to Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Sebastian Ting said living in a multi-racial country like Sarawak, there is a need for the people to enhance existing ties.

“The peace and harmony that we are enjoying all along should not be taken for granted. Instead, we should at all cost preserve the existing unity from being destroyed by negative elements,” he said in his address at the Gawai celebration at Kampung Masjid, Kuala Baram yesterday.

Ting, who is also the chairman for SUPP Piasau branch, wanted the people to be proud of the multi-ethnicity and multi-religious values  and treat them as among the most precious assets in the country.

Thus, he pointed out the practice of open house during festive season as exemplary in fostering closer racial ties and cultural understanding, leading to a sense of community and neighbourliness.

“This traditional practice is vital to the successful implementation of the 1Malaysia concept,” he said.

On development, he called on the people to work together with the government in order to ensure smooth implementations of the various development projects.

He urged the people to give their full cooperation the Barisan Nasional (BN) government in helping Sarawak achieve greater development.
