KAPIT: The Orang Ulu community has been called on to stay united and continue working together as a family.

Hulu Rajang Member of Parliament Datuk Billy Abit Joo said unity is vital because the community is a minority group.

He also called on Orang Ulu youth, such as those in Belaga, to preserve the image of the community. “The youth in Belaga also must be responsible by always preserving the morals and image of the Orang Ulu, especially to the public, by being well-disciplined and proud of their roots,” he said when launching a futsal competition in Belaga recently.

Abit cited Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) CEO Senator Datuk Seri Idris Jala as a prime example of an exemplary Orang Ulu leader. He said youths should use Idris’ successful career as inspiration for their future.

“To have a winning mentality and never be half-hearted in doing anything,” he said.

Abit presented a grant of RM5,000 to help youth in Belaga hold more activities this year and also announced an RM10,000 grant for the Uma Juman village security and development committee (JKKK) for longhouse repairs as well as RM3,000 in aid for senior citizens in the village.

The futsal competition organised by the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera (PBB) Belaga Youth Wing involved a total of 26 men’s teams and six women’s teams.
