Sabah has almost one million voters

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah now has 926,638 registered voters, according to Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman, Datuk Wira Wan Ahmad Wan Omar.

However, 258,943 people in Sabah aged 21 and above have not registered as voters.

“The EC regards this as a big number, although not as big as in some other states.

We urge those eligible to register as voters,” he said after meeting with representatives of political parties in Sabah on the General Election Campaign Enforcement Teams, here, today.

Wan Ahmad said voters could check Sabah’s electoral roll over a one-month period since June 1 via SMS by typing in their identity card number and sending it to 15888 or call the state EC number at 088-488588.

On the enforcement teams, he said 31 teams had been formed in Sabah to represent the respective parliamentary constituencies including Labuan.

Each parliamentary constituency is represented by one team, while Kota Kinabalu, Sepanggar, Batu Sapi, Tawau and Sandakan have two teams each, after taking into consideration the size of these areas and their number of voters.

Wan Ahmad said the teams would monitor the activities of the contesting parties and candidates throughout the official campaign period.

“These enforcement teams can bring down or remove slanderous posters and other campaign materials which disparage and embarrass the candidates or those that touch on the sensitivities of candidates, religion and race, or that can cause public anger,” he said.

Wan Ahmad said each team was represented by an EC officer, a police Inspector or officer of higher rank, officers from the local authorities and representatives of the contesting parties or candidates. -Bernama
