SIBU: The highly anticipated Sibu Golf Club-organised ‘Deputy President Cup’ on June 9 at Sibu Golf Course (SGC) will see some 100 golfers vying for the grand prize as well as other attractive prizes.

Club captain Lau Hui Kui told The Borneo Post here yesterday that the tournament was among the array of activities to raise the standard of golfing in Sibu.

On the cash prizes for hole-in-one, he said, they were jointly sponsored by club deputy president Dr William Ting, committee members and Tang Tung Seng.

Lau added: “There are six hole-in-one locations, where for each hole, golfers stand a chance to take home a handsome cash prize of RM2,000.”

The other prizes were sponsored by Dr Ting, who is also the organising chairman of the event, he noted.

The prize-giving ceremony would be held on the same day.

Meanwhile, Lau mentioned that Dr Ting and vice-president Ting Siew Hock were among the sponsors for the 14th Sibu Amateur Open Golf Championship – the town’s biggest golf tournament, on June 15-17.

“There are about 120 golfers from various parts of Sarawak, Sabah and Peninsula as well as Brunei expected to take part in the tournament, vying for the coveted Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Wong Soon Kai Challenge Trophy.

“The championship is sanctioned by Sarawak Golf Association – a governing body of golfing activities in the state,” he said.

He pointed out that they were in the final stage of preparation for the grand tournament.

Meanwhile, Lau encouraged club members and the public to attend their two-day workshop at Sibu Golf Course, on June 13-14.

He said the workshop was on how to conduct a competition, and would be conducted by referees from Kuching, Miri and here.

He urged those interested, including non golfers, to promptly register for the workshop

In conjunction with the 14th Sibu Amateur Open Golf Championship, they are also rolling out training for assistant referees.

In the meantime, Lau said the club had sent four junior golfers to participate in the Miri Junior Open (under-18) from June 6 till 7.

This, he said, was part of their long-term planning in grooming up young golfers.
