KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Sibu branch chairman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said its election machinery is working very hard on the ground to retain Lanang and wrest Sibu back from the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in the upcoming parliamentary election.

He said confidence to win both seats is high as all sub-branches and service centres under SUPP Sibu are working at “full swing”.

“Although we lost Sibu during the 2010 by-election to Wong Ho Leng (DAP state chairman), we have to win it back this time,” he said when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday.

SUPP Sibu has nominated incumbent Datuk Tiong Thai King to defend Lanang and Temenggong Vincent Lau for Sibu.

Sibu parliamentary constituency is supported by its sub-branches in Sungai Merah, Sungai Teku, Sungai Pradom and Empawah, and service centres in Sibu Town, Seduan, Engkilo, Queensway and Rajang Park.

Lanang is supported by Naman sub-branch and Stabau, Sibu Jaya, Lanang Road, Tiong Hua Road and Town service centres.

“All these are strong organisational units under SUPP Sibu branch and they are working very hard on the ground to help Temenggong Vincent Lau and Datuk Tiong Thai King,” Wong said when asked to comment on party president Datuk Seri Peter Chin’s recent statement during SUPP’s 53rd anniversary dinner that he placed high hopes on Wong to deliver Lanang and Sibu for the BN.

Wong, who is Second Finance Minister and Local Government and Community Development Minister, said besides the sub-branches and service centres, SUPP Sibu has also established Bumiputera committees to take care of Bumiputera areas.

“We also have a strong state seat in Nangka which is held by Dr Annuar Rapaee from PBB (Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu). Nangka is part of Sibu parliamentary constituency and it is in good hands because Dr Annuar is working hard and always on the ground to help Temenggong Vincent Lau.”

On Monday night, Chin had said that Sibu remained important to the party and the BN.

“I wish Wong and his team all the best in the election. I hope we can work together soon. Their victory is our victory also.”

When asked to comment on this, Wong replied: “I will try my best as I’m in charge of Sibu and it is also my duty to help the party and BN win the two parliamentary seats which are allocated to SUPP.”

On internal problems plaguing the party since the run-up to the party’s triennial delegates conference (TDC) last year, Wong said he preferred to leave it to the Registrar of Societies to sort out.

“Right now, I do not want to talk about party matters. I will just concentrate on helping SUPP and BN win Sibu and Lanang.”
