Golf for good character building, says Sebastian Ting

MIRI: Golf is a good game which helps in character building among youths and above all it is also a fun way to make friends with fellow players.

“Golf is a good game – you learn good character and you can make friends too by mixing freely with fellow golfers and I never fail to notice that golfers do that while enjoying their game” said Datuk Sebastian Ting at the lunch cum prize presentation ceremony held at Miri Golf Club (KGM) recently.

“KGM junior golf meet is now the best in Sarawak… it is very competitive and the junior players have proven themselves capable of rising up to the challenge even with adult players in the Open meet” he said while advising the junior golfers to appreciate their parents’ help and support in developing their interests in the sports.

Earlier, KGM captain and advisor, Dr Philip Raja welcomed all the participants, their families and representatives from various organisations and talked about the change in this year’s event title that also incorporates the club’s name.

The junior golfers were also commended for raising RM1,500 in aid of charity in which is KGM played its part as well by donating RM2,000 to Miri Autistic Association which is represented by its president, Jerome Chia.

A total of 59 golfers aged between seven to 17 years old were in the fray for the Datuk Sebastian Ting challenge trophy in the 8th KGM Junior Golf Championship.

They were representing Jurong Country Club of Singapore, Segamat Country Club, Sarawak Golf Club (KGS), Sibu Golf Club, Bintulu Golf Club, Miri Golf Club (KGM) and Malaysia Golf Association (MALGA).

The golfers competed in Boys and Girls sections in which they divided into various categories namely Boys A where five competed, Boys B (20), Boys C (8), Boys D (7), Girls A (1), Girls B (12) and Girls C (6).

The results of final playoffs saw the Malcom Tay emerged as overall champion in the Boys’ section after finishing tops in the Boys’ A event while the runner-up was Ling Wei Bin and in third placing was Mohd Ihsan Hatim.

Boys B’s winner was Jordan Jude Tay and followed by Aizat Junaidi while Ryan Dainil finished third. In the Boys C’s category, Lim Beng Keat beat Malcolm Ting into second placing while Liew Yih Seng finished third.

The Boys D was won by Eng Wei Jin while Mathew Peregline Ong and Elden Sim finished second and third placing respectively.

The Girls A sole winner was Vivian Chin while Alethea Cordelia won the Girls B’s event while the Girls C’s category was won by Eliza Mae Kho.
